The Better AI (“this app,” “we”) is a small personal project. This page explains, plainly, what happens to your data when you use it.
What we collect
- Messages and images you send. Whatever you type or attach is sent to the AI model processing your request (see “Third parties” below) in order to generate a reply. We don’t store this on a server ourselves.
- Documents you attach (PDFs, Word docs, text files). For plain text files and Word documents, the content is extracted directly in your browser and sent to Groq as text. For PDFs, each page (up to the first twenty) is also rendered as an image in your browser and sent to Groq to be transcribed — this lets diagrams, equations, and screenshotted content on the page get read too, not just selectable text. In both cases, only the extracted text is kept in your conversation; page images are sent for transcription and not stored anywhere by us.
- Web search queries, when the assistant searches on your behalf. In Fast and Thinking modes, the assistant can search the web for current information. This happens through Groq’s built-in search tool, not a separate service we run — see “Third parties” below.
- Voice recordings, if you use the microphone. If you record a voice message, that audio is sent to Groq to be transcribed into text, then discarded — we don’t keep a copy of the audio itself. The “read aloud” feature works the opposite way: it uses your own browser’s built-in text-to-speech, so nothing is sent anywhere for that.
- Conversation history. Saved only in localStorage in your own browser, so we can restore your chat if you refresh the page. It never leaves your device to reach us, and it’s specific to that one browser and device — clearing your browser data or using a different browser/device won’t carry it over.
- Basic, anonymous usage analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to see aggregate traffic and performance (e.g. how many people visited, how fast pages load). This is cookieless — visitors are identified by a hash that resets daily, not by anything that persists or identifies you personally.
- Image generation prompts, in Image mode. What you type in Image mode is sent directly from your browser to Pollinations.ai, a free, no-account image generation service — unlike the rest of the app, this request doesn’t pass through our server at all. See “Third parties” below.
- A daily usage counter tied to your IP address, if you’re outside Australia. To prevent bots or heavy anonymous use from exhausting the shared AI quota, we track how many tokens have been used from a given IP address today. This is just a number linked to an IP address and a date (e.g. “203.0.113.4 used 340 tokens on 2026-08-13”) — no message content is stored. It’s automatically deleted after about a day.
- Approximate location, from your IP address. Our hosting provider (Vercel) automatically estimates a general area (city/region/country) and timezone from your IP address for every request — this is standard web infrastructure behavior, not something we set up separately. We use it only to give the assistant sensible defaults (like your local time or currency) when relevant; it isn’t precise, isn’t stored anywhere by us, and doesn’t use GPS or ask for location permission.
What we don’t do
- We don’t require an account, so we don’t collect your name, email, or any login details.
- We don’t sell or share your data with advertisers.
- We don’t use tracking cookies.
- We don’t keep a server-side copy of your conversations.
Third parties
Your messages, any attached images, and any voice recordings you send are processed by Groq, a third-party AI inference provider, in order to generate responses or transcribe audio. Groq’s own privacy policy governs how they handle that data on their end.
In Image mode, your prompt is sent directly from your browser to Pollinations.ai, a free, no-account image generation service, to generate the image — this one bypasses our server entirely. Their own privacy policy governs how they handle that data; we have no visibility into or control over it.
In Fast and Thinking modes, the assistant can also search the web when a question needs current information. When it does, your query (or a version of it) is sent to Groq’s built-in search tool, which fetches results from external websites. We don’t control what those sites do with a request that reaches them as part of a search.
This app is hosted on Vercel, which may log standard technical information (like IP addresses) as part of normal web infrastructure and security — the same as virtually any website you visit.
Your control over your data
Since your conversation history lives only in your browser, you’re always in control of it. Use the “Clear” button in the app to erase it instantly, or clear your browser’s site data for this domain to remove it yourself at any time.
Children’s privacy
This app isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
If how this app handles data changes meaningfully, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised accordingly.
